The inspiring, instructive story of Levi’s resurgence, from the CEO who led it.

Doug McMillon

"What do John Wayne, Bob Dylan and Chip Bergh have in common? They all helped make Levi’s cool. It’s a big accomplishment to take a brand with a long, interesting history and make it fresh and relevant again. I’m so glad Chip took the time to tell us the story. You will be, too, because his stories will inspire you and be relevant to your world today.”

"Chip Bergh called me when he became Levi’s CEO, asking to meet because he had a lot to learn about apparel and retail. That kind of honesty is refreshing, and a big reason why Chip succeeded. He knows what he doesn’t know.  It took me about a minute to know that he was "the right choice". A Levi's Story is full of that kind of honesty. It’s also a terrific read.”

“Chip Bergh’s transformation of Levi's proves that thriving workplaces build thriving businesses. A Levi’s Story shows that belief, values, and caring for people's well-being are not warm and fuzzy nice-to-haves, but engines of performance.”

THE AUTHOR

Chip Bergh

Chip Bergh is the former president and CEO of Levi Strauss & Co. and the author of A Levi's Story: Leading the Revival of an Iconic Brand (Harvard Business Review Press, March 2027), which tells the inside story of Levi's turnaround and distills his career lessons into six tenets of what he calls "brand-driven leadership." When Chip took over in 2011, Levi's was a shadow of its former self. He brought the cool back, modernized the company from the inside, and led a tenure marked by a 40% revenue increase, a five-fold rise in market cap, and a successful 2019 IPO. Before Levi's, Chip spent 28 years at Procter & Gamble, where he helped lead the creation of Swiffer, turned around Mr. Clean and Old Spice, and led Gillette’s global razor and blades business after P&G acquired the company. Dozens of Chip’s direct reports have gone on to become CEOs of other companies. Today, he is a senior lecturer at Harvard Business School and serves on several boards, including HP (as chairman), Pinterest, and Lululemon Athletica. He began his career as a U.S. Army officer in West Germany.

He has been recognized for taking public stands on social issues, including launching the Safer Tomorrow Fund to prevent gun violence, and in 2019 Fortune ranked him 16th on its list of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Levi's Story

For more than a decade, Levi’s was stagnating, at one point near bankruptcy, its iconic 501 jeans fading into a nostalgic relic amid trendier competitors.

Today the brand is everywhere again: on college campuses and red carpets, styled by Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, and immortalized in Beyoncé and Post Malone’s hit “Levi’s Jeans.” A Levi’s Story is the inside account of that turnaround, told by the CEO who led it.

Chip Bergh reveals the pivotal decisions and six tenets of “brand-driven leadership” that fueled Levi’s revival, offering any leader a vital resource for building, reviving, or growing a brand.
